Think being a Household Cavalry soldier is all about military parades and riding horses? Think again. This is one of the most varied roles in the British Army. Not only will you be taking part in the world’s most famous military ceremonies, you’ll be driving some of our most renowned vehicles – the Scimitar and AJAX armoured fighting vehicles. You’ll enjoy the best of both worlds. Your work is absolutely vital to Army operations and integral to your Corps – the Royal Armoured Corps. When you’re out in the field, you’ll be our on-the-ground specialist in reconnaissance/surveillance. That means gathering crucial information on the enemy and using that information to carry out attacks with speed, momentum and firepower. Working closely with your team in combat and ceremony, you’ll build unbreakable bonds with friends who become family.

With such an important role comes world-class training – in everything from fieldcraft to how to handle a rifle – and unbeatable development opportunities – like an apprenticeship or additional qualifications in saddlemaking. We’ll give you all the training you need to reach your full potential. Whether you’re astride your horse guarding Buckingham Palace or driving a Scimitar vehicle in Army operations, you’ll be making your family and friends proud and achieving much more than you ever thought possible.

WORLD-CLASS TRAINING

Join us and you’ll start by learning the soldiering skills common to every member of the British Army, like outdoor survival and the safe handling of weapons. After this, you’ll head to Bovington, Dorset, for 20 weeks of specialist training. Here, you’ll focus on communications, fighting from vehicles and an introduction to the AJAX armoured fighting vehicle. You’ll get a driving licence (if you don’t already have one) and a tracked vehicle licence (the H licence). Then, you’ll move to Windsor and begin your riding course to prepare you for all aspects of becoming a mounted ceremonial soldier on duty in London.

GAIN QUALIFICATIONS

The Army can help you gain a range of qualifications. These could include:

  • Business Administration Apprenticeship – Level 2 or 3 (including Functional Skills in Maths, English and Information Technology).
  • Additional stable management, farrier and saddlemaker qualifications.

SHOW PEOPLE WHAT YOU’RE CAPABLE OF

We'll be behind you every step of the way as you move up the ranks. Right from the start of your training, you’ll get the support and encouragement you need to make a success of your career. Work hard and you could get promoted, which will mean more responsibility and extra pay.

Become a Household Cavalry Soldier and you’ll:

- Earn a starting salary of around £15,600 during Basic Training which will rise to £20,000 after completing 26 weeks’ training or after completing your Initial Trade Training, if less than 26 weeks.

- Receive subsidised accommodation and facilities, increasing your disposable income
